
Do EVs still save money in Canterbury in 2026?

From 1 April 2024, light EVs lost their RUC exemption and now pay $76 per 1,000km, the same rate as light petrol vehicles under the RUC framework. That killed the single biggest cost advantage EVs held over petrol cars in New Zealand, and it changed the maths significantly. The Clean Car Discount also ended in late 2023, so there is no longer a government top-up softening the purchase price. What remains is the raw equation: electricity cost per kilometre versus petrol cost per kilometre, adjusted for real-world Canterbury conditions. Christchurch buyers face slightly different inputs than Auckland. Home charging overnight on a standard Meridian or Contact residential rate sits around 28-32 cents per kWh depending on your plan and whether you have solar. Public charging via ChargeNet or Chargefuel runs 55-75 cents per kWh, which changes the calculation sharply if you rely on it regularly. Petrol at South Island pumps has been sitting in the $2.60-$2.85 per litre range through early 2026. Against that backdrop, the Leaf, MG ZS EV, and BYD Atto 3 are the three EVs showing up most consistently in Canterbury's used car market under $35,000, making them the relevant comparison point for most buyers doing the sums right now.
RUC charges are locked in, power bills remain high, and used EV prices have softened. We crunch the real per-kilometre costs for the Leaf, MG ZS EV, and BYD Atto 3 against their petrol rivals.
The short answer is yes, EVs still cost less per kilometre to run than their petrol equivalents in most Canterbury scenarios. But the margin has compressed, and the assumptions matter more than they used to.
Before the RUC exemption ended, the EV advantage was blunt and obvious. Now you need to do actual arithmetic.
What the Nissan Leaf costs per kilometre
A 2018-2019 40kWh Leaf is selling in Canterbury for $16,000-$21,000 right now. Battery degradation is real at this age and mileage, so assume real-world range of 180-220km rather than the rated 270km. Average consumption is around 17-18kWh per 100km in mixed driving, and in a Canterbury winter with the heater running hard, that climbs closer to 20-21kWh.
Charging at home overnight at 30 cents per kWh, you are paying roughly 5.1-5.4 cents per kilometre in energy costs alone. Add the $76 RUC per 1,000km and that is another 7.6 cents. Total: around 13 cents per kilometre.
A comparable 2018-2019 Toyota Corolla hatchback in 1.8-litre petrol form uses around 7-8 litres per 100km in real-world driving. At $2.70 per litre, that is 18.9-21.6 cents per kilometre in fuel, plus RUC already embedded in pump price. The Corolla wins on purchase price at $14,000-$18,000, but loses clearly on running cost. At 15,000km per year, the Leaf saves roughly $700-$1,200 annually in fuel and RUC, depending on charging habits.
Servicing narrows the gap slightly. The Leaf skips oil changes and has simpler brakes due to regenerative braking, but the 12V auxiliary battery needs replacing every 4-5 years ($200-$300), and any traction battery work on an older Leaf is expensive. A main battery replacement from a Japanese import channel can run $4,000-$8,000 depending on capacity and source. That risk needs to be priced in when buying a high-mileage 2018 Leaf.
The MG ZS EV and BYD Atto 3
The 2021-2023 MG ZS EV (51kWh version) sits in a different bracket: $24,000-$31,000 used. It consumes around 16-17kWh per 100km and delivers a genuine 300km-plus in warmer months, closer to 250km in a Canterbury winter. Using the same 30 cents per kWh home rate, energy cost runs about 4.8-5.1 cents per kilometre. With RUC added, you are at roughly 12.4-12.7 cents per kilometre.
The BYD Atto 3 (60.5kWh) is the newest of the three in the used market, with 2022-2024 examples appearing at $29,000-$36,000. Consumption is similar to the MG at around 16-17kWh per 100km. The range is better and the interior quality is noticeably stronger, but the parts supply story in New Zealand is still developing. BYD has local dealers, which helps, but independent workshops are still building familiarity with the platform. Budget for dealer-only servicing for now.
Both the MG and BYD beat a comparable petrol SUV on per-kilometre cost. A 2021 Mazda CX-5 2.0-litre petrol uses around 9-10 litres per 100km in real Canterbury mixed driving. At $2.75 per litre, that is 24.75-27.5 cents per kilometre. The gap against the EVs is 12-15 cents per kilometre, which at 15,000km per year translates to $1,800-$2,250 in annual savings. That is a meaningful number.
Where the maths goes wrong
If you do not have home charging, the numbers shift badly. Relying on public fast chargers at 65 cents per kWh pushes your energy cost to around 10.4-11 cents per kilometre. Add RUC and you are at 18-19 cents per kilometre, barely better than a frugal petrol car, and worse than a modern hybrid like the Toyota Corolla Cross or Suzuki Vitara Boosterjet.
Flat or apartment dwellers in Christchurch without a dedicated carpark are in a difficult position. The EV running cost case depends almost entirely on cheap overnight charging, and without it, the premium you pay on the purchase price of an EV over a petrol equivalent is very hard to recover.
Tyres are worth flagging. EVs are heavier and torquier, and they eat tyres faster than equivalent petrol cars. The Atto 3 in particular, on 215/55R18 rubber, will go through a set every 35,000-45,000km for most drivers. Quality tyres in that size run $220-$280 each, so factor in $800-$1,100 per set more frequently than you might on a petrol car.
Insurance is another variable that does not favour EVs. Comprehensive cover on a $30,000 MG ZS EV for a 40-year-old Christchurch driver is typically $1,400-$1,800 annually, versus $900-$1,200 for a comparable petrol SUV. Repair costs on EV-specific components, and the difficulty of sourcing some parts, push premiums up.
The EV case still holds for the majority of Canterbury buyers with home charging, a commute of 30-80km daily, and a purchase in the $20,000-$32,000 range. But it is a narrower win than it was in 2022, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something.
